John Rodden has published six books devoted to the life and legacy of George Orwell, his chief works in literary and cultural history concern the achievement and example of American and European intellectuals.

In his presentation, Rodden will address the social and political predictions that George Orwell made in his book 1984 and compare these to similar situations found in today's world. The event is also the opportunity to create debate around some of the issues tackled by Orwell, such as permanent war, oppression, and surveillance; and engage the student body in frank discussion about these ailments of society.

This event is sponsored by Citizenshift (Institut du Nouveau Monde), the Brave New 1984 web project and the Concordia Documentary Centre, Concordia University.

About PR[IM]CA
As the inaugural event of the Intermedia/Cyberarts Major within the Faculty of Fine Arts at Concordia University, the 2009 PR[IM]CA exhibition represents a watershed event for the IMCA program. Officially founded in 2004, the IMCA major is an amalgamation of three earlier Undergraduate Fine Arts programs: Interdisciplinary Studies, Video History and Production, and Electronic Arts. It is a new media major focused within the interdisciplinary domains of video, robotic art, electronics, performance, sound art and immersive environments, with the present exhibition bringing together the graduating projects of students within their final year of the three year program of study.

Artist Talk: RAFAEL LOZANO-HEMMER speaking at Concordia University!

Electronic artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer develops large-scale interactive installations in public space, usually deploying new technologies and custom-made physical interfaces. Using robotics, projections, sound, internet, cell-phone links, sensors and other devices, his installations aim to provide "temporary antimonuments for alien agency".

His work has been shown in three dozen countries, including Biennials in Venice (Italy), Istanbul (Turkey), Havana (Cuba), Sydney (Australia), Liverpool (UK), Shanghai (China), Seoul (Korea), and Seville (Spain), and has been commissioned for events such as the Millennium Celebrations in Mexico City (1999), the Cultural Capital of Europe in Rotterdam (2001), the United Nations' World Summit of Cities in Lyon (2003), the opening of the Yamaguchi Centre for Art and Media in Japan (2003), the Expansion of the European Union in Dublin (2004) and the 40th Anniversary of the Tlatelolco Student Massacre in Mexico City (2008).

Lozano-Hemmer's works have received a Golden Nica, a distinction and two honourable mentions at the Prix Ars Electronica in Austria. He has also won two BAFTA (British Academy Awards for Interactive Art) in London, a distinction at the SFMOMA Webby Awards in San Francisco, "Artist / Performer of the year" at Wired Magazine's Rave Awards, a Rockefeller fellowship, the Trophée des Lumières in Lyon and an International Bauhaus Award in Dessau, Germany.

Art Matters 2009 - NIGHT VISION NOCTURNE

Presented in association with the IMCA Student Collective, NIGHT VISION NOCTURNE is a new media based gallery
exhibition showcasing seventeen artists working within the creative domain of video, electronic, laser and photography
based installation as well as theatre and video performance. Luminosity is explored within a gallery space that is in
complete darkness, playing with the viewer's perceptive abilities.

NIGHT VISION NOCTURNE Submission Call

For this year's Art Matter's festival, the IMCA Student Collective will present NIGHT VISION NOCTURNE: a new media show focusing on themes relating to the night (think: darkness, sleep/sleeplessness, dreams, silence, emptiness, ambiguity, imaginary space, and hiding). We are looking for new media installation based artwork including but not limited to sound, video installation, electronics/robotics/kinetics, interactivity, computer based, etc. which can be experienced in a darkened gallery space, either employing night time as a topic of artistic exploration or alternately, utilizing methods of self-illumination in its presentation.

We have an excellent gallery space for this year's show too (Espace Artefacto located at 3520 St-Jacques) and encourage performance artists to also apply as we will be looking for performance art for the vernissage event at the gallery.

So please apply this year!

I- NAME
1- The organization shall be called the Intermedia / Cyberarts Student Collective, hereafter referred to as the IMCA Student Collective (or IMCASC).
2- FASA recognizes the IMCA Student Collective to be a club representing the interests of students enrolled in the Intermedia/Cyberarts program at Concordia University, and working in the disciplines of new media arts (electronic, interactive, computer and/or sound based arts), performance art and video installation.

II- OBJECTIVES
The IMCA Student Collective exists to serve students in the IMCA program at Concordia University by promoting student work, organizing social activities, and representing IMCA students issues.

1- Promoting Student Work
Given the increasing interest in new media art, it remains largely cost prohibitive for students to show new media art outside of the classroom environment, given the cost constraints, limited gallery space and equipment heavy complexity of installing technology-based art, especially of an installation nature. The IMCA Student Collective thus seeks to provide opportunities for students to show their work outside of the classroom, in an open atmosphere. This will encourage transparency by allowing student work to be seen by other IMCA students, other Concordia University Fine Arts students, or by a larger audience, that may include the greater Concordia University community and the public at large. This could be accommodated through multidisciplinary new media art exhibitions, public performances, interventions, a YouTube video channel and/or a DVD compilation of work. The IMCA Student Collective also seeks to facilitate the participation and representation of IMCA students in larger events, like the Art Matters Festival.

2- Social Events / Nework
The IMCA Student Collective aims to create opportunities for students to gather, get to know each other, and celebrate their work and achievements in an agreeable and stimulating atmosphere: educational workshops, vernissages, fundraisers, pub nights, parties, potlucks, etc. The IMCA Student Collective will also create a network to connect students within the department, through this blog, a mailing list, newsletters, a Facebook group, and numerous actual meetings throughout the academic year.

3- Student Representation
There are many issues that students in the IMCA program feel are not being addressed by the IMCA Department, the Faculty of Fine Arts and Concordia University in general, such as funding increases, access to equipment and space in EV building (for studio production and installation / performance presentation), etc. The IMCA Student Collective seeks to establish stronger connections with faculty and the administration in order to ensure that student issues and concerns are raised and addressed. This will be accomplished through student representation at faculty / department meetings and events, at FASA Council meetings, and through other means such as the circulation of petitions.

III- MEMBERSHIP
Membership shall be extended de facto to all undergraduate students currently enrolled in the MCA major, and also to students taking an IMCA elective class, faculty, past students, and other interested individuals from the greater artistic community who wish to join.

IV- MEMBERS' RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1- All IMCASC members have the right to attend all IMCASC meetings.
2 - All IMCASC members have the right to be a candidate for any office of the executive and the right to be elected and hold that position in accordance with the requirements as set out in this constitution.
3- All IMCASC members have the right to examine all records pertaining to the IMCASC.

V- EXECUTIVE
The IMCASC Executive is the over-seeing and organizing body for all activities and events initiated by the club. The Executive shall consists of Vice-Presidents assigned to specific functions, with an unlimited number of members who may temporarily or fully sit on the Executive to assist the Vice-Presidents in their functions. The Executive must submit a written monthly report to the FASA Council at the duly convened council meetings.

A- Vice-Presidents
The Vice-Presidents shall take charge of specific functions and duties related to the running of the club. In order to properly represent the interests of students from the IMCA program, all Vice-President positions within the Executive shall be filled by students currently registered within the IMCA program. In addition, the Vice-Presidents shall alternatively appoint a Vice-President to officially represent the IMCASC at FASA Council monthly meetings.

B- Executive Members
Executive Members shall assist the Vice-Presidents in leading the organization and running events and activities relating to the club.

VI- ELECTIONS
1- The Vice-Presidents shall be elected annually at the general election to be held in the month of March.
2- The elections shall be overseen by the FASA VP Clubs.
3- Executive members are not elected. Instead, they are appointed in deliberation by the Vice-Presidents.

VII- EQUIPMENT
1- All video or miscellaneous technological equipment purchased by the IMCA Student Collective shall be donated to and permanently reside with the IMCA Video Depot (EV-6.621, Concordia University). In order to access loans of this equipment for future shows and events, students must be enrolled in a minimum of one IMCA qualifying course at the time of the loan. Students may loan out the equipment on a first come, first serve basis, for a maximum of up two weeks.
